Large fruit, a short season and heavy logistics: watermelon calls for a different kind of planning from the rest of the fruit Hortiberia markets. With pieces of 3 to 8 kg and boxes of up to 22 kg, transport and palletisation weigh on the final cost as much as the product itself, which is why the technical sheet concentrates on the figures a buyer needs to calculate the pallet.

Declared availability covers May to October, in parallel with Galia melon. For the European importer, this spans the whole summer demand, from the first warm weeks to the close of the season, with one origin and one commercial contact.
Fruit weight ranges from 3000 to 8000 g and counts available are 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 per box. Packing is in cardboard boxes of three weights, plus Greenbox and Minigreenbox presentations:
The number of boxes per pallet is the same across the three weights, so the only variable that changes gross pallet weight is the box format chosen.
Watermelon travels at 7-8 °C. It is sensitive to excessive cold and to knocks during loading, so a stable pallet build and correct strapping matter as much as temperature. The group's growers work under standards such as GLOBALG.A.P. and IFS and the equivalents required by retail, with lot and field traceability and compliance with EU rules on residues and labelling.
Buyers who take watermelon from Hortiberia tend to reserve capacity in spring, specifying counts and box format so that the May programme starts with the pallet already calculated. Once the first loads have arrived, weekly volume is reviewed against actual sales.
The Hortiberia Group brings together the drive and experience of four market leaders from the sector in order to consolidate a project with a great future.
