Hinojo - Fennel - Hortiberia

Fennel

Organic and conventional

Bulb fennel is a winter vegetable with strong demand in Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland, and one of the lines Hortiberia supplies with production from the group's growers in south-east Spain. It is grown in open field and harvested by hand, with field selection of white, compact, undamaged bulbs so that the product arrives at destination ready for the shelf or the professional kitchen.

Full product sheet

Availability

Fennel is available in November, December, January, February, March, April and May. This seven-month calendar matches the period of highest consumption in central and southern Europe, when local production is scarce.

Sizes, weight and packaging

It is graded in counts of 18, 20 and 24 bulbs per box, with a bulb weight of 200 to 270 g. There is a single export presentation:

  • 5 kg cardboard box: 120 boxes per Euro pallet and 150 per 100×120 pallet.

The 5 kg box is easy to handle on the platform and allows mixed pallets with other winter lines from the group when the volume of a single product does not justify a full pallet. Fennel is available as organic and conventional, with the organic line certified under EU regulation and following the same calendar and format.

Cold chain and assurance

Recommended transport temperature is 1-4 °C. The group's growers cool fennel after harvest and hold the cold chain to loading, which prevents loss of turgor in the bulb and yellowing of the fronds. Every shipment carries lot and plot traceability, complies with EU maximum residue levels and labelling rules, and comes from farms working under GLOBALG.A.P. and IFS or the equivalent standards required by European retailers.

To include fennel in a seasonal programme, the buyer only needs to define count and loading frequency; Hortiberia's commercial structure coordinates production with the member growers and adjusts volumes week by week.

The Hortiberia Group brings together the drive and experience of four market leaders from the sector in order to consolidate a project with a great future.
