Size grades

Onions are graded by diameter into five sizes:

  • Grade 1: 115+.
  • Grade 2: 110/115.
  • Grade 3: 90/105.
  • Grade 4: 70/90.
  • Grade 5: 75/55.

Large grades are generally directed to food service and cutting plants, while medium and small grades are the usual choice for retail nets sold by the kilo.

Packing and pallets

  • Cardboard box.
  • Nets 14 × 1 kg: 48 boxes per Euro pallet, 60 per 100×120 pallet.
  • Nets 10 × 2 kg: 36 per Euro pallet, 45 per 100×120 pallet.
  • Sacks of 10, 20 and 25 kg: 100, 50 and 40 sacks per pallet respectively.

Transport and storage

Onions are less demanding in transit than leafy vegetables, but they still need moderate cold and good airflow to prevent sprouting and rots. The recommended transport temperature is 2-5 °C, held steady for the whole journey and ideally continued in the customer's store.

Traceability and standards

Every consignment is identified by lot and plot of origin, with documentation available to customers and inspection authorities. The group's growers work under GLOBALG.A.P. and IFS, alongside the equivalent schemes required by European retailers, and comply with EU rules on maximum residue levels, plant protection products and labelling.

Hortiberia's commercial team can build a stable onion programme with each customer, setting the grade and packing mix for the year and reviewing it as market conditions change.

The Hortiberia Group brings together the drive and experience of four market leaders from the sector in order to consolidate a project with a great future.
