Patatas Potatoes Hortiberia

Potatoes

Potatoes round off Hortiberia's vegetable offer with a high-volume product that turns continuously in any distribution platform, wholesale market or food-service channel. They come from the group's growers in south-east Spain and are sold through the same commercial and logistics structure as the rest of the vegetable range, which lets buyers concentrate purchasing and make better use of each truck.

Supply calendar

Potatoes are available ten months of the year: January, February, March, April, May, June, September, October, November and December. Only July and August fall outside the calendar, so the line can be kept in programme almost continuously from a single origin.

Sizes and formats

Commercial grading is in two sizes: 45 and 65+. In terms of packaging, potatoes are the product in the group's range with the most alternatives, covering retail and industrial bulk alike:

  • Cardboard box.
  • Raffia sack.
  • Jute sack.
  • Net.
  • Jumbo (big bag).

Weights available in sack, net and jumbo are 10, 15, 20, 25 and 1,000 kg, so the range runs from small formats for repacking at destination to the one-tonne big bag for processors or platforms with their own packing line.

Transport and assurance

Recommended transport temperature is 7-8 °C, higher than for leafy vegetables, which needs to be taken into account when building mixed loads. Consignments are identified by lot and plot, comply with EU maximum residue levels and labelling requirements, and come from farms working under GLOBALG.A.P. and IFS or the equivalent standards required by the retail trade.

For programmed potato contracts, the usual approach is to fix size, packaging and monthly volume at the start of each period and to adjust loads weekly with Hortiberia's commercial team, which coordinates supply across the group's growers.
