Romaine

Organic and conventional

Few leaf lines sell as consistently across Europe as romaine, and Hortiberia supplies it from its member growers with a reference head weight of 350 g aimed at retail self-service and professional kitchens. The long, crisp leaf goes mainly into Caesar-style salads and sandwich assembly, which keeps demand steady regardless of season.

Full product sheet

Year-round availability

Romaine is declared available from January to December. Retail chains and food service operators can therefore run a single annual programme with stable weekly volumes, without alternating origins when the season changes.

Weight and pack formats

Reference weight per head is 350 g. Packing is in a cardboard box, with two bag formats, each with its own palletisation:

  • Bag 10×1 – 35 kg, 60 boxes per Euro pallet and 75 per 100×120 pallet.
  • Bag 10×2 – 7 kg, 88 boxes per Euro pallet and 110 per 100×120 pallet.

The 10×2 format suits distribution platforms that deliver small units to store; the 10×1 format works better for wholesalers and central kitchens handling volume.

Organic, conventional and cold chain

Romaine is available as certified organic under EU regulation and as conventional, on the same calendar for both lines. Transport temperature is 1-4 °C, held continuously from the packhouse to delivery. The group's producers work under standards such as GLOBALG.A.P. and IFS, as well as the equivalent schemes required by retail chains, with traceability by lot and field and compliance with EU rules on plant-protection residues and labelling.

As a high-rotation line, romaine is mostly programmed by calendar week, with bag format and production line fixed at the start of the agreement and volumes adjusted to seasonal demand. Buyers moving from another origin usually begin with a trial period of a few weeks to confirm head weight and shelf life at their platform before committing the annual volume.

The Hortiberia Group brings together the drive and experience of four market leaders from the sector in order to consolidate a project with a great future.
