Shorter and thicker-skinned than the English type, the Spanish cucumber is the standard variety on the domestic Spanish market and across much of southern Europe. Hortiberia exports it through the winter months with production from the group's growers in south-east Spain, for importers and wholesalers who handle both cucumber types and prefer to source them from one supplier.

It is available in November, December, January, February, March, April and May, which makes it straightforward to programme both cucumber types on the same truck for most of the season.
Spanish cucumber is graded into sizes E (15 cm) and F (18-25 cm), with a unit weight of 120 to 160 g. The available presentation is:
It is supplied as organic and conventional. The organic line is certified under EU regulation and shares format and palletisation with the conventional crop.
Recommended transport temperature is 4-7 °C. Cucumber suffers chilling injury if carried below that range, so on mixed pallets it should be grouped with lines of compatible temperature. The thicker skin of the Spanish type gives it better resistance to handling than the English cucumber, a point that wholesale market operators value in longer rotations. Each consignment is identified by lot and plot, complies with EU rules on residues and labelling, and comes from farms working under GLOBALG.A.P. and IFS or the equivalent standards required by the retail trade.
To bring Spanish cucumber into a winter programme, the buyer only needs to define size and loading frequency; Hortiberia coordinates production with its member growers and adjusts volumes week by week, keeping the importer informed of crop progress throughout the season.
The Hortiberia Group brings together the drive and experience of four market leaders from the sector in order to consolidate a project with a great future.
